Dedicated TO contemporary art from the African continent presents
Works by nine emerging and established artists from Sub-Saharan Africa
Curated by Rebecca Anne Proctor
The online exhibition “African Reflections” reflects on the wealth of contemporary art creation produced on the African continent,
particularly by artists in countries such as Kenya, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo
that have long been overlooked by the international art scene.
These are Zambian artists David Daut Makala, Adrian M. Ngoma and Geoffrey Phiri;
Paul Onditi and Taabu Munyoki from Kenya;
and Jackson Tshisekedi, Kura Shomali and Rodrigo Gukwikila.
These artists are part of a generation of young African artists working on the continent whose engagement with contemporary practice
is rapidly garnering international attention. Their work, predominantly in mixed media on canvas and installation reveals abstract
and figurative renderings that capture both the past and present realities of their homelands,
exploring both the geopolitical forces that have shaped the social and economic realities of the African continent
and their respective nations, as well as the beauty of everyday life in Africa, the vibrancy of its people, lush landscapes and rich cultures and traditions.
For example, Paul Onditi’s works, mainly executed on digital polyester inkjet plate,
Through these works we gain a glimpse into everyday life
for the individual and the collective in the countries of
Kenya, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
These are works that poignantly, fluidly and honestly depict realities of these
countries on the brink of change—whether that be vast modernisation or political and social change.
Importantly, through these works on canvas the viewer gains a rare insight into the complexities
of contemporary life through images that powerfully depict the fervent beauty of
these nations as well as their calls for change and justice.

KURA SHOMALI
Born in 1979, Kananga, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kura Shomali live and works in Kinsahasa. In 2001, Kura Shomali interrupted his medical studies, and integrated the Academy of Fine Arts of Kinshasa where he took part to the creation of the group EZA possible. He creates works on paper in which he boldly mixes charcoal, ball pen, gouache, ink, marker and collage, which gives a unique aspect and texture to his work. His first drawings, made in a hurry, are inspired by the bubbling city of Kinshasa and by the magazines that pass from hand to hand. His work is a reflection of the chaotic megalopolis where he lives and that he "digests" as he explains himself. In his most recent works, Kura Shomali appropriates images of well-known African photographers and artists that he interprets with humor (Samuel Fosso, Sammy Balogi, Malick Sidibé, Jean Depara, ...) He also creates puppets from recycled materials, that he stages in videos in which the puppets talk to expose corruption and conflicts that gangrene his country. His work is in CAAC, the Pigozzi Collection in Geneva, Switzerlandl; the collection of Farida et Henri Seydoux in Paris, France; Fondation Cartier pour l'Art Contemporain, Paris, France; Fondation Alliances, Casablanca, Morocco; Pizzuti Collection, USA; Collection Gervanne et Matthias Leridon, Paris, France; the Saatchi Collection in London, United Kingdom and Fundación AMMA in Mexico City, Mexico. -

Paul Onditi
Born in Kenya in 1980, Paul Onditi moved to Germany in 2000, where he studied art at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach am Main. In 2010 he returned to Nairobi, where he is currently living and practicing.
Part of a generation of young African artists working on the continent whose engagement with contemporary practice is rapidly gaining international attention, Onditi’s paintings explore richly layered images and contemporary global issues through the use of highly experimental, labour intensive techniques. Filmstrips, prints, transferred images, pared down layers of pigment, caustic acid and thin layers of oil paint are patched together in meticulous ways to visualise an imaginative world that carefully unpicks at current divisions and tensions based on the same ideological, political and religious differences that have plagued our collective existence since time immemorial. -
