In this drawing, a powerful man leans over smaller shadowy figures and a naked bulb swings above. Mguedmini is a prolific artist, working often in large canvas formats; his subjects, the people around him, are often alone, tense and on the brink of motion, faces obscured. Always attracted to the figure, in Paris – at the Beaux-Arts, where he went in 1970, following his studies in Tunis – he concentrated on anatomical drawing. After a period of experimentation with different techniques (oils, charcoal and photography), between 1975 and 1989 Mguedmini was in Zurich at the Rote Fabrik atelier, where he worked with clay and made works inspired by the poems of Pablo Neruda (1904–1973), an exploration that began a path to expressionism. Since his return to Djerba, where he still lives, he has been involved in the art direction of films and in public art, including the major street art project in the village of Riadh in 2014.15
